Sport: Impossible Code

For faithfully complying with the National Collegiate Athletic Association's "sanity code," which prohibits the wholesale hiring of football talent, University of Richmond had won its reward—defeat in twelve of its last 14 football games. Last week, after wrestling with the problem for three years, President George Modlin threw in the towel. Richmond is abandoning the code, he announced, as the only alternative to withdrawing from the rough & ready Southern Conference, where four colleges are already in open defiance of the code.*
