EARNINGS: Avery's Way

After two years of executive head-chopping, Montgomery Ward's tough old (76) Chairman Sewell Avery proved last week that he could get along quite well by himself. He reported that Ward's, in the first half of 1950, had boosted its profits a whopping 90% ($27.6 million v. $14.4 million in the first half of 1949), although gross sales rose only 3.6%. Avery modestly gave the credit to rising prices and scare buying.
