In Maine a half-century ago, the Memorial Day Parade that formed under the late-blooming apple blossoms was always a Republican parade. The veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic were getting along in years and every so often one of them would step out of ranks with a jug and come back a little red in the cheeks.
