¶ As the second-place Cleveland Indians faded in the American League pennant race, terrible-tempered General Manager Frank Lane complained that Manager Joe Gordon would need a miracle to win, added that he was eying four or five other men for the job next year. Gordon promptly quit, and an offer promptly went out to the leading candidate on Lane's little list: the terrible-tempered Leo Durocher, former manager of the Dodgers and Giants, who quit his $65,000-a-year job with NBC-TV with the announced intention of returning to baseball.
