The Press: Political Strikes

In the handbooks of Communist subversive tactics, the press is a prime target. Two months ago, Red-led unions closed down all of London's dailies for two weeks (TIME, May 2). Last week in France, Communist-led mechanical unions shut down 140 of France's 160 dailies (and the Paris edition of the Herald Tribune) for 24 hours. The strike was called to protest a bill, passed last week by the French National Assembly, eliminating closed-shop privileges that have enabled Reds to dominate French trade unions.
