GERMANY: Gunfire in the Sky

Out of a clear blue sky one day last week two Soviet MIG-15 jet fighters dived on an Air France passenger plane flying above scattered clouds between Frankfurt and Berlin. The MIGs let fly with cannon and machine guns, hitting the wings and a propeller and piercing one of the gas tanks of the DC-4. One cannon shell exploded inside, where the eleven passengers aboard the 54-seat plane had been ordered to lie flat in the aisles. Two of them were seriously wounded.
