As the Government's fiscal year ended
last week, Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snyder eked out a note of
cheer for taxpayers: the federal deficit at the end of the fiscal year
on June 30 was about $3.5 billion, instead of the $5.5 billion he
predicted six months ago.
