In Chicago, the Giants of the Negro American League announced that they
were signing on a new outfielder and new pitcher recruited from a local
high school. Both were white teenagers, the first in the league's
17-year history. Said League President J. B. Martin: "These boys were
taken on their merits as ballplayers."
