In spite of roadbed conditions on the newly laid track, the television express was picking up speed. NBC last week linked a new station—WBAL-TV of Baltimore—to its Eastern chain. Gloria Swanson, 48, doyenne of silent cinema sirens, signed up for an hour-long program (baking cookies, retailing gossip, showing off hats) on WPIX, starting in June. CBS announced that a new network series, beginning April 6, would take the camera right into Broadway theaters for a scene or two; Lucky Strike would sponsor, and the curtain-raiser would be a snatch of the hit of the year, Mister Roberts.
