On March 6 Colonel Russell A. Wilson, of Marion, Ill., 38-year-old command pilot with the Eighth Air Force, realized two big ambitions: he was promoted to brigadier general and led an air division on the first big U.S. assault on Berlin.

But over the target his luck ran out: a burst of flak enveloped his Fort, sent it diving out of formation.

"Carry on," came the last crisp command from the division commander's flaming ship. Russ Wilson was listed as the eleventh U.S. air force general missing or dead in operations in World War II.
