a cablegram from England, goggled in mute horror at the message: "Son
born." Frantic inquiries at the cable office disclosed that Form
Message 185 had been substituted for No. 85 ("Receiving letters
occasionally"). The error made a difference to the captain: he had not
seen his wife in two years.
