Army & Navy: Railroad Ace

Since the Battle of Java, Pilot Grant Mahoney of the U.S. Army Air Forces has been sweating out a fifth aerial victory, which would make him an ace (TIME, Jan. 11). Last week Grant Mahoney, by now a major, was still a four-plane man. But south of Lashio, Burma, he riddled and destroyed four more Jap railroad engines, became a locomotive ace.
