Promoted to major general with 22 other brigadiers last week was Claire Lee Chennault, commander of the new Fourteenth Air Force in China. Upped with him was his former commanding officer, Clayton Lawrence Bissell, head of the Tenth Air Force in India.
Also promoted, to brigadier general, were 71 colonels (including William J. Donovan, head of the War Department's super-hush-hush Office of Strategic Services, who had been quietly ordered to active duty). The Army, which has now passed the 5,500,000 mark, has about twice as many general officers as it ever had...
