Business & Finance: Aircraft Leads the Parade

A better than expected gain in freight carloadings pushed TIME's Index to 182.9 (estimated) in the Sept. 5 week, a new all-time record and 20 points above last year.

Aircraft makers are still the drum majors of the war production parade. July output of California's Lockheed Aircraft topped everything produced in 1940—a smacking $45,000,000. Thus Lockheed is producing planes at the rate of $500,000,000 a year, a fantastic increase over deliveries of $2,007,000 in 1936.
