Calendar Girl (Republic) is a rickety little' mutton-sleeved musical about a turn-of-the-century rooming house for artists. Typical characters: a fireman's daughter (Irish) whose father thinks ill of artists; a patrician two-timer (rich, from Boston) who retouches a portrait of her into fancy leg-art; a poet who sings like, and is played by, Kenny Baker; a straight man who writes songs and gets the girl. Typical comedy routine: a firemen's tug of war complicated by a banana peel and a sneeze. All this corn has a kind of innocence about it that is almost—but not quite—disarming enough.
