Medicine: Polio Report

In the first six months of 1945, polio cases soared 26% over 1944, the worst epidemic year since 1916. Since June, the case rate has tapered off.

Last week:

¶ The U.S. had 253 new cases, compared with 462 in the same week last year. ¶ Texas led all other states in this year's total of polio cases (357). Hardest hit was Harris County (which includes Houston), which in one week in June reported 19 new cases.

¶Mill Valley, Calif, (ten miles north of San Francisco) had an explosive outbreak of 18 cases.
