For the first time in 27 years Trieste had a free election last week. What was technically a choice of local officials turned out to be a sort of unofficial plebiscite between the Italian and Slav claims to the Free Territory.
On the basis of early returns parties favoring a reunion of Trieste with Italy were running ahead by a ratio of 2-to-1 over parties favoring "independence." The supporters of "independence" included both Stalin's Communists and Tito's.
