Canada at War: Vote Catchers

The candidate who polled the greatest .number of civilian votes (23,800) was able, amiable Howard Charles Green, Vancouver Progressive Conservative. Second-biggest vote catcher (21,123) was a political newcomer, Roland Beaudry, 39, Montreal Liberal.

Beaudry co-owns La Revue Moderne, largest French-language magazine in North America, and three French radio stations. As a campaigner, he wrote 3,000 personal letters to constituents and, claims he, "kissed every goddamned baby in the constituency—every baby over 21."

In Vancouver, the new Democratic Party's William R. Smith got exactly 404 votes after a campaign in which he urged Canadian-U.S. union.
