To Parliament Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden reported: "The Soviet Government has informed the British Ambassador in Moscow . . . that to meet the wishes of the British Government they are taking steps at once to set Mme. Arcizewska free." The elderly wife of Polish Premier Tomasz Arcizewski had been arrested in Poland by the NKVD (Russian secret police). Asked if there were any reasons for her arrest, the Foreign Secretary answered: "I have been given some, but I thought in the light of the happy conclusion to my inquiries it would be better to leave it there."
