Foreign News: Solicitude

Near Vught, in liberated Holland, New York Timesman James MacDonald inspected a Nazi death camp. Like Maidenek and Tremblinka in Poland, it had electrified barbed wire, lime pits, gallows, suffocation cells, dissection tables, crematories.

But there was an incongruous detail never reported from any other death camp: nurseries for the children of women prisoners. On the nursery walls were pictures from Little Red Riding Hood and Babes in the Woods.
