In St. Louis' Chase Hotel, Corporal Joe Gantenbein, onetime (1940) infielder on the Athletics, slapped the Yankees' Bill Dickey on the back, asked if Dickey remembered him.

"Sure," said baseball's greatest catcher. "We pitched you high and inside all the time. If we pitched you outside it was BOOM. What's your name, anyhow?"
