World War: IN THE AIR: Twelve Moons

June, the twelfth full month of the Battle of Britain, was, with one exception, the year's least cursed. Only 399 persons were killed by German air raids. Many more than that (628) were killed accidentally in the U.S. over the Fourth of July weekend.

The only less dire month was July 1940, before the Battle had grown angry. That month 258 were killed. Worst month was September, with 6,954 deaths. Total for the 13 months: 41,488 killed.
