Stricken two years ago with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (hardening of the spinal cord), the great, clean-living, slugging Yankee first baseman, son of a German-born janitor, had hung up the all-round record of baseball: 2,130 consecutive games (for 14 years he played in every Yankee game); more than 100 runs a year; a lifetime batting average of .341.
