Barney Ross, 40, onetime world's lightweight (1933-35) and welterweight (1934-38) boxing champion, now a Manhattan advertising man, who was awarded the Silver Star for heroism on Guadalcanal, won another battle in 1946 when he overcame an opium addiction picked up after his injuries in the Pacific; and second wife Cathy Hewlett Ross, 33, ex-showgirl who divorced him in 1946; in Del Mar, Calif.

Died. Colonel Francisco Javier Arana (37), chief of Guatemala's armed forces and heavily backed candidate for the presidency; by assassination; in Guatemala City's 20th conspiracy since March 1945 (see HEMISPHERE).
