National Affairs: Something for the Boys

In a generous mood, the House last week approved a bill to give $1,250,000 a year in pay boosts to Cabinet officers and some 240 other department and agency heads. Cabinet members would be raised from $15,000 to $25,000.

FBI Chief J. Edgar Hoover was down for a $1,000 raise in the original bill. When it reached the floor, two members suggested he get a $3,500 raise instead, and the proposal was quickly adopted by voice vote. His new salary: $17,500 a year.
