ARMED FORCES: Now There Are Three

Something new has been added to the U.S. atomic arsenal. This week the White House gave out a sketchy, cautious report by the Atomic Energy Commission on its tests last month at the Marshall Islands proving grounds (TIME, April 26). Not one but three atomic weapons—"of improved design"—were proved "successful in all respects." AEChairman David Lilienthal said the tests were "a milestone in atomic development."
