Along with the Christmas bills, the U.S. people got an unhappy New Year greeting: living costs at the start of 1948 will probably be above 1947's record levels. Last week the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that consumer prices reached a new high in mid-November. The level was 8% above a year ago, 24% above mid-1946, 67% higher than at the war's start in 1939. A 2% lift in wholesale prices since November indicated new consumer price peaks in 1948.
