Hans Kahle, 48, commander of the Loyalist International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War, original of the General in Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls; after a stomach operation; in Ludwigslust, Soviet Zone of Germany. The Russians had rewarded Kahle's faithful Party work by making him chief of police of Mecklenburg state.
