This, said CBS, was where Commentator William L. Shirer got off. Hereafter, another CBS news analyst—Joseph C. Harsch, the network later announced—would be using the time (Sun. 5:45-6 p.m.).

Why, demanded Commentator Shirer, had he been dropped? His latest Hooperating, 6.9, was almost the highest of any CBS Sunday daytime program. He could only conclude, he told the press, that he had been "gagged" for his liberal views —just the way, he thought, that a good many other "liberal" commentators had been gagged in recent months. Shirer said he would argue it out on the air this week during his last broadcast.
