COLOMBIA: The Low Road

Among Colombia's cloud-fingering Andes, five commercial plane crashes have killed 92 people in the past three months. After a TACA plane crash in northeast Colombia last week (five dead), many a Colombian decided that he was no longer air-stomached. In spite of the difficulties of surface travel, the big business at airline ticket counters was cancellations. Among the cancelers: ex-President Alberto Lleras Camargo, newly elected Director General of the Pan American Union (TIME, March 24). To get to his new job in the U.S., he decided to take a ship.
