National Affairs: Work Done

Last week the Senate:

¶ Received from the Banking & Currency Committee a bill providing for the $3.75 billion loan to Britain.

¶ Restored to the Emergency Housing bill the $600 million subsidy authorization which the House had rejected.

¶ Passed the Bell bill regulating U.S.—Philippine trade during the first 28 years of the Islands' independence, and the Tydings bill authorizing a $620 million Philippine rehabilitation program (see THE PHILIPPINES).

¶ Confirmed the nominations of 1) Major General John H. Hilldring as Assistant Secretary of State; 2) George S. Messersmith as Ambassador to Argentina; 3)...
