Hardly had Harold finished, when Aneurin began. In his lusty, left-wing weekly, the Tribune, new Health Minister Bevan put the U.S. in its proper placeas the world's only surviving big capitalist power.
Bevan urged close economic collaboration between the U.S. and Britain. "But," he wrote, "if the United States as seems at present likelyinsists during the next few critical years on returning to the unfettered ups and downs of 'free' monopoly capitalism, the socialist governments of Europe and the Commonwealth must stick together in cushioning their planned economies against destructive economic shocks from that quarter."
