All previous shipbuilding records went by the boards this week when Henry J. Kaiser's amazing Oregon Shipbuilding Corp. delivered a 10,000-ton Liberty freighter to the Maritime Commission only 48 days after the keel was laid.

Kaiser's new record comes less than a month after WPB patted him on the back for completing a ship in 78 days—almost one month faster than other builders. Explaining that prefabrication turned the trick, Kaiser this week admitted: "I didn't know whether it would work."
