An unofficial National Gallery by virtue of location, Washington's sedate Corcoran swam into the news last week. Rejected by Corcoran's jury for its sixteenth biennial show of U. S. oil paintings was The Eternal City, famed satire on Roman Fascism by conscientious Artist Peter Blume (TIME, Jan. 3, 1938). When supporters of Artist Blume snorted "politics!", supporters of the Corcoran sniffed "publicity!"
