When U. S. sailors went to sea to fight, splicing-the-main-brace was a rite performed with fiery grog. But now U. S. sailors go to sea to keep the peace. Josephus Daniels and others have told them that grog is not good for peaceful men. The U. S. S. Memphis, about to depart from Baltimore for a southern winter cruise, last week installed a main-brace-splicer which improved even upon Mr. Daniels' famed grape juice.
