In the good grey New York Times appeared a picture of Curtiss-Wright's new XP-55 experimental fighter (see U.S. AT WAR). The Times ran a five-line headline to explain solemnly why the new backside-to plane is called the Ascender:

NEW PLANE HAS PROPELLER IN REAR,

SEEMS TO BE SPEEDING BACKWARD

EXPERIMENTAL FIGHTER CRAFT MADE BY CURTISS-WRIGHT HAS SUCH A HIGH RATE OF CLIMB IT HAS BEEN DUBBED THE ASCENDER
