Alfonso Pena Jaramillo attacked President José Maria Velasco Ibarra, was promptly jailed for showing "disrespect." Just as promptly, the President came to the rescue. Wired President Velasco to Critic Jaramillo: "You have perfect freedom to think, criticize and censure. You have been the victim of an abuse of which I protest as the President of a liberal country."
