Perhaps the closest race of all would be for Senator from California. The Democrats were acting as if the unseating of 38-year-old Republican William F. Knowland was the most important thing they had to do. To California went two of Harry Truman's Cabinet—Clinton Anderson and Cap Krug—and his ever-loyal Senator Alben Barkley.
