Americans will soon have dirty faces and hands to go with their meatless
tables. As the slaughtering of livestock declines, so falls the supply
of tallow, a basic ingredient of soap. Last week Procter & Gamble, one
of the world's largest soapmakers, predicted that the soap shortage in
the U.S. will soon be worse than during the war.
