All summer long, in parks and playgrounds of the U.S. zone, some 10,000 German boys have been forgetting how to goosestep while they mastered a new sportbaseball. Egged on by G.I.s, opposing nines have knocked homers and stolen bases while frenzied fans bawled out the umpire with shouts of: "Hornochs! Faulenzer! Dieb!" (Blockhead! Bum! Crook!).
Last week the Russians, who have been watching the spectacle with a wild surmise, officially protested: the U.S. must modify its athletic program, stop teaching baseball to Germany's youth. Reason: it is too militaristic.
