When Maurice Bradford, a schoolteacher, was 28, and four years out of college, he killed a woman. He was sentenced to life in prisonbut never lost his interest in education. He became librarian of the state penitentiary at Concord, N.H.; his 200-odd fellow inmates came to him for advice on correspondence-school courses to take and books to read.
