The Press: Casualty

On Okinawa last week, a Jap shell fragment seriously injured LIFE Photographer W. Eugene Smith, just as he was shooting a final picture for a layout on "A Day with a Front-Line Soldier." Commented Smith, a veteran of 13 Pacific actions and 23 combat bombing missions, at a field hospital afterwards: "I forgot to duck, but I got a good picture of those who did."
