Aboard a submarine at Guam, Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz (the Navy's No. 1 submariner) did honor last week to the feats of the undersea servicefeats which must still remain unsung for reasons of security. Awarding medals to officers and enlisted men wearing the dolphin insignia, Nimitz announced their total accomplishment in the war against Japan: 1,119 ships sunk, aggregating 4,500,000 tonsmore than half the ocean-going tonnage with which Japan started the war. In the last year, 2,000,000 tons went to the bottom.
