Vittorio Emanuele kept his promise. The day
after the Allies entered Rome, the Little King turned over his powers
(but not his title) to his son, 36-year-old Crown Prince Umberto. At
least until the U.S. and Britain keep their promise, give Italians a
chance to choose their own government, the Crown Prince will rule as
Lieutenant of the Realm.
