British voters have handed the Churchill Government's Coalition candidates rough treatment in recent by-elections. This has led some Americans to a belief that a majority of Britons want a general election now. Last week the Gallup poll of

Britain reported that exactly the opposite was true.

A canvass showed that 82% of the people do not want an election until after the Nazis are licked. This overwhelming majority was divided: 22% for voting immediately after victory; 24% for a six-months' wait; 36% for a twelve-months' wait. Only 12% of the polled wanted to vote immediately; only 6% were still undecided.
