nervous breakdown and asked permission to retire. Reasons: for months
Bishop Lothe has been treated with "icy disdain" by the townspeople;
his congregation in Trondheim Cathedral, where he preaches in uniform,
has dwindled to a mere handful; soon after he gets on a crowded
streetcar he often finds himself the sole occupant.
