World: Stalingrad Stands

Stalingrad still stood. More than a month ago, as they laid siege to the city, the Germans showered down leaflets announcing that its fall was imminent. Two weeks ago the Germans fought into the streets of Stalingrad. Reinforced by air transport, they had at least 36,000 men in the city itself last week. This week they were still there. But so were the Russians.

As the siege passed its 34th day, the Russian Army newspaper Red Star came out with this cautious statement: "There now is a chance to hold and repulse the Fascists."
