ASSIGNMENTS: To Duty

Last week the following assignments to duty were noteworthy:

Appointed special assistant to the Secretary of State, ex-Ambassador Joseph C. Grew, recently returned from Japan.

To a new job in Britain, Brigadier General Walter Bedell Smith, formerly U.S. secretary of the combined U.S.-British chiefs of staff in Washington. He will be chief of staff to Lieut. General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Commander in Chief of U.S. forces in Europe.

Assigned by OWI to plan a touring display of United Nations war materials, Stage Designer Norman Bel Geddes.

Commissioned an Army captain, Bandleader Glenn Miller. His orchestra will disband.
