Great Silence
A low murmur of traffic and a muffled clatter of Halloween high jinks floated up one evening last week to the roof of Hollywood's Knickerbocker Hotel. Searchlights on top of nearby cinema houses fingered the rosy sky over Hollywood Boulevard. On the hotel roof, ignoring a milling throng of spiritualists, magicians, newshawks, cameramen and gawpers, a plump, white-haired woman walked down a length of red plush carpet on the arm of a bearded man.
