ASSIGNMENTS: To Duty

Outstanding among last week's assignments to duty were the following:

Made chief of staff to Lieut. General Dwight D. Eisenhower in North Africa, Brigadier General Walter Bedell Smith, ex-secretary of the combined U.S.-Britain chiefs of staff in Washington.

Made chief of the Air Service Command in the European war theater, Major General Henry J. F. Miller, previously head of the command in the U.S.

Ordered back to his post next month as Ambassador to Russia, Admiral William H. Standley, who has been in the U.S. the past five weeks.
